Hours past the overtime threshold are paid at a higher rate. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, that's 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. 46 hours at $25 is 40 × $25 = $1,000, plus 6 × $37.50 = $225, for $1,225.
Federal overtime rules cover non-exempt employees. Independent contractors set their own terms, though some contracts pay a higher rate past an agreed number of hours, and this calculator works for that too.
Some states count overtime by the day as well as the week. California, for example, pays time and a half after 8 hours per day. Use the hours past the daily limit as the overtime hours, and check your state's rules for anything more.
